The options for food delivery are no longer limited to pizza and Chinese food. Now, you can get a box full of fresh ingredients ready to be made into a tasty dinner. HelloFresh is subscription box service. Their services offer omnivore and vegetarian options, farm-fresh ingredients, chef-inspired recipes, and flexible subscriptions. They provided me with three meals to do a review of HelloFresh meals.
Subscription meal services provide the convenience of doing the grocery shopping and meal planning for you, and delivering right to your door. I’ll admit I like going grocery shopping (except on Sunday afternoons). But this box was perfect for this week since I was traveling for work and didn’t do our normal meal planning and grocery shopping. Keep reading for my review of HelloFresh Meal.
How are meals delivered?
The Hello Fresh box of ingredients included three small boxes. There was one for each recipe, and below the three boxes were the meats surrounded by one large ice pack keeping everything cold. When I wrote this post, I had not taken my food service course yet but found all the ingredients at the right temperature.
The Recipe Cards
Each meal has a recipe card. The front of the card has a final photo of the meal, along with the ingredients needed, total prep and cook time, and total calories. Although, the total prep time on each of the meals says 10-15 minutes, it took us longer to prep one of the meals due to how slow I am at cutting veggies.
I liked the back of the card, where it tells you what cooking tools you will need. Also written on the back is step-by-step instructions with images.
Prepping the Meal
The meal prep doesn’t require any specific cooking knowledge. You do have to be able to chop. Everything is explained and the meals include less than eight ingredients.
Are the ingredients fresh?
The ingredients were generally excellent and fresh. Although, the fish didn’t hold well together, it tasted great. I think this had more to do with our technique than how fresh the fish was. .
Are they considered healthy?
Overall, the meals are similar to what we usually eat – a veggie, starch, and main dish. The recipe cards listed total calories. And the three meals we tried had a calorie range of 500-600 calories. For most, this calorie range for dinner is enough. For some, it may not be enough on your plate.
Since the ingredients are fresh, there aren’t any preservatives.. The meals were not allergy-free since couscous contains gluten and the Hello Dukkah meal contained sour cream. My dairy-free husband left the sauce off and used more salt and pepper for flavoring.
The meals are made to serve two people. I shared some of my main dish with my toddler. The only left over food we had was some couscous.
I can’t speak to the pricing since HelloFresh did supply this box to me for free. We like the idea of using box delivery service for weeks I travel, as it makes it much easier for Thomas and Emmett.
